Communal Heating

Please read our fact sheet on communal heating systems which explains the different systems we have.  You can also view a list of all blocks with communal heating to check your heating type.

In September 2010 all residents who live in properties with communal heating were written to and asked the number of heating hours they wanted to receive.

Residents were presented with a number of heating hours options and asked to select their preferred choice.

The most popular option chosen by residents was to receive 18 hours of heating per day. The full result can be viewed on the Islingon Council website.

For many years the council has generally provided 18 hours heating per day between September and May, so there will be no change for the majority of residents linked to communal heating boilers.

There are some communal boilers which will be kept running for 24 hours because they can only provide hot water if the heating is still running. These boilers will remain in operation for 24 hours per day but will be turned down low overnight.

Homes for Islington and Islington Council are committed to providing council homes with affordable, controllable heating and hot water systems that provide value for money. Efficient systems help to reduce the cost of heating and reduce the negative impact on the environment.

We appreciate that adequate heating is important for good health, particularly for the elderly, the very young or those in poor health.

More information about keeping warm in winter or measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient can be found on the “Keeping Warm” page of this website.
