Adaptations

If you are have a permanent or substantial disability you may be eligible for equipment or adaptations in your home, to help you manage everyday tasks.

An adaptation is an alteration to part of your home. If you find it difficult to get around your home, you may need to have your property altered to allow you to live there independently. Adaptations can range from simple things like grab rails to more complex alterations like a level access shower.

The adaptations service to Homes for Islington properties is delivered by Islington Council. If you feel you may benefit from adaptations, you will firstly need to be visited by a member of the Occupational Therapy Team from Islington Council.

The Occupational Therapy Team can offer advice about alternative ways to carry out tasks, with or without special equipment or adaptations.

Adaptations Service Standards

Homes for Islington and Islington Council are keen that the adaptations process is made as clear as possible. Residents should also be clear about the standards they can expect from Islington Council and any contractors that are used to install adaptations.

Homes for Islington and Islington Council have agreed the following service standards for the adaptations service.

• You will be kept up to date with the progress of your adaptation
• You will be informed of how long you can expect to wait for a major adaptation

The Islington contractor:

• Will agree a start date and finish date for the work to suit you
• Cause as little disruption, dirt, dust and noise as possible
• Work tidily and clear up at the end of every day
• Make sure you can use toilet and washing facilities during the work
• Make sure they have everything they need to complete the work
• Allow you to choose colours, where possible
• Remove all debris and leave the area in its original state, on completion of work
• Personally show you how to use your adaptation or leave written instructions
• Wear their identification card at all times
