The Freedom of Information Act 2000

Freedom of Information

The Freedom Of Information Act gives the public the right of access to information held by all public bodies. The aim of this is to open up organisations to public scrutiny and make the whole of government more accountable.

The right to request information

Anyone can request any information held by publicly owned authorities like HFI. Although much information will be able to be found on the website or in HFI’s offices. Any information that is not already made publicly available can be requested.

Publication scheme

All public authorities have an approved publication scheme. This is a guide to the information held by the authority so members of the public can access it. The scheme sets out what information is published or intended to be published, the format in which it can be accessed and any charges that will be made for the information to be accessed.

How to request information

To access information a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act can be made. For a request to be made under freedom of information it must meet the following criteria:

1. The request must be made in writing – including fax and email
2. The request must contain the name and address of the applicant (an email address may be provided as an address).
3. The request must describe the information that is requested (the more specific the request and the information required, the easier it is for HFI to identify the information being requested).

When making a request please state the format in which you would like to receive the information (e.g.: electronic, hard copy, viewing at an HFI office)

When making a request for information not provided in HFI’s publication scheme it is HFI’s current policy not to charge for photocopying, postage and administrative costs. If it is deemed that it will require more than 18 hours of labour, or if a document is very large, HFI reserves the right to recover costs. These costs will be charged at £25 per hour of labour, including the initial 18 hours, as set out under the Act. Any charge will be payable in advance to the information being released.
