What to do if you smell gas

If you think you smell gas in your property:

• DON’T turn electric switches or appliances on or off
• DON’T smoke or use naked flames/matches
• DO isolate the gas from the gas meter at the control valve
• DO open windows and doors to allow the gas to disperse
• DO contact Transco on 0800 111 999; or alternatively, if you are a council tenant, call HFI Direct on 0800 694 3344.

Useful information that you will need to have available when you call Transco or HFI Direct to report a gas leak:

• The address/location of the suspected gas escape or gas emergency
• How many people are at the property
• Where the smell is most noticeable
• How long the smell has been noticeable
• Are any neighbours affected
• Your name and phone number
• Any special circumstances or access information
