Improving green spaces on HFI estates

Islington Council, in Partnership with HFI has successfully applied for £200,000 funding from the Mayor to pay for improvements to the green spaces on Homes for Islington’s estates.

As the improvements will be paid for by external grant funding, leaseholders will not have to pay anything towards the works.

The purpose of the funding is to make the green spaces on your estates more attractive and encourage wildlife. We also hope to make the green areas better able to cope as temperatures rise due to climate change.

Some of the things we can do are:

• Plant bulbs such as bluebells and snowdrops to brighten up your estate
• Develop wildflower meadows that are more likely to survive as temperatures increase due to climate change
• Add bird and bat boxes
• Plant hedges to provide habitats for animals such as hedgehogs
• Provide gardening tools and water butts
• Develop allotment plots for resident food growing

The estates we will be improving as part of this programme are:

Bemerton
Beresford Lodge
Bevin Court
Braithwaite House
Brunswick Close
Coleman Mansions
Daren Court
Finsbury
Halton Mansions
Jessop Court
King Square
Margery Street
Newbery House
Quaker Court
Redbrick
St. Lukes
Sanders Way
Spa Green
Stafford Cripps
Wynford Road

As well as improving the green spaces we will also be holding free workshops over the summer for adults and children. We’ll be doing things like making bird and bat boxes, planting bulbs, and also helping residents to learn about what wildlife helps food growing. These workshops will be open to all HFI tenants and leaseholders, not just people living on these estates.

We have already been out and about on most of these estates meeting residents and listening to your ideas about how to improve your green spaces. However, we are always keen to hear from people with new ideas.

We will also be setting up a mailing list for interested residents who want to be kept up to date with gardening and wildlife events taking place across Islington.

If you live on one of these estates and have ideas about how to improve your green spaces, or would like be added to the mailing list or attend one of the workshops, please contact:
