Cavity Wall Insulation Programme

Islington Council and Homes for Islington have been successful in securing close to £5 million from the Homes and Communities Agency to provide cavity wall insulation.

HFI intends to insulate approximately 8,400 properties - helping to keep homes warmer, reduce energy bills and tackle climate change.

What will happen?

  • Specialist contractors will inject cavity wall insulation between the two layers of brickwork that make up the external wall of your property.
  • Small holes will be drilled into the brickwork and the insulation is blown through the holes. The holes are made as small and as unnoticeable as possible. Once the cavity is full the holes are filled and matched to the existing wall.
  • Access equipment such as scaffolding or cherry pickers may be needed but inconvenience to residents will be kept to a minimum.
  • The programme will run until March 2011. We will notify all residents benefitting from the work as the programme is developed.

How does cavity wall insulation help?

  • Around a third of all heat lost in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls.
  • The insulation makes it harder for heat to pass through the walls making the home better insulated. Cavity wall insulation helps to prevent heat loss in winter and overheating in summer.
  • Insulating cavity walls can save around £115 on fuel bills per year and 610 kg of CO2.
  • If every house in the UK with unfilled cavities installed cavity wall insulation it would cut CO2 emissions by nearly 4 million tonnes, enough to fill Wembley Stadium 500 times, and save £690 million a year.
