Antisocial Behaviour

Respect Standard

What it is

Respect is about central government, local agencies, local communities and every citizen working to built a society in which we can respect one another – where anti social behaviour is rare and tackled effectively, and communities can live in peace together.

When respect for self, others and the community breaks down it can invariably lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour. Respect or the lack of it does more than affect us as individuals. Understanding and adopting a code of behaviour is what makes society work as a whole and is why the government is so committed to working with the public to promote a new culture of respect.

In January 2006 the Government introduced its programme of RESPECT, a cross governmental and wide ranging strategy to promote respect positively, address bad behaviour, tackle its causes and offer leadership and support to local people and services.

The Government’s proposals to deliver on the Respect drive were set out in the Respect Action Plan.

This ongoing programme serves to unite and integrate the work of central government, local agencies, local communities and ultimately every citizen, with the aim of delivering solutions to tackle anti-social behaviour and create a society built around respect.

The respect programme was supported further with the introduction in August 2006 of the Respect Standard for Housing Management.
