HFI in Partnership

Homes for Islington are committed to providing first class services that meet the needs of our community. A key strand of our community engagement is the accessibility of facilities that meet the interests and requirements of young people who live on our estates.

In the last two years we have worked in partnership with Islington Council, Arsenal FC and several organisations in providing services across the Borough. Together we have delivered the following initiatives: -

SAFE – Sports Activities for Everyone

The Sports Activities for Everyone Programme (SAFE) is an initiative delivered in Partnership with Homes for Islington, Islington Young People’s Service and several other partners. The project is aimed at engaging young people in a variety of sporting activities around Islington, including coaching, competitions and accredited training courses.

Activities are targeted at young people aged 8 – 19 on estates around the borough, and also offered anyone aged 16 and above the opportunity to work towards qualifications as a sports coach or leader.

The project has two key objectives: - to combat antisocial behaviour amongst young people and to increase positive activities and opportunities for young people and adults living on estates.

During 2006/07, 44 volunteers each delivered 12 hours of mentored coaching, engaging over 1100 young people of which 54 people obtained nationally – recognised and accredited sports coaching and leadership awards. A total of sixteen inter – estate tournaments were organised

The National Federation of ALMO’s acknowledged the achievements of the scheme, where it won one of the 2007 awards.

HFI and Arsenal on-estate Positive Futures partnership initiative

Homes for Islington entered into Partnership with Arsenal football club in 2004 to provide an on estate positive future partnership. This programme has been rolled out across five council estates managed by HFI. This initiative aims to provide weekly on estate sports facilities and access to further educational extra curricular activities, such as homework clubs and IT skills.

This initiative regularly manages to engage over 370 youngsters from these five estates in the delivery of sporting and educational activities.

Arts on Estates

As part of our continued commitment to providing our community with access to exciting and diverse activities we have successfully run in 2007/08 five new projects, each with an arts based theme.

The schemes run covered such skills as dance, art, dj skills and sculpture and a fifth project presented young individuals with the opportunity to display their journalism skills by producing a newsletter which focused on each of the projects. Click here to view a copy of the newsletter.

These projects were delivered across the following estates, New River Green, Kings Square, Finsbury Estate, Holly Park, Hillrise and King Henry's Walk. Each of the projects proved popular and they were successful in attracting and engaging over 180 of our estates younger residents.

We will be looking to run similar schemes throughout 2008/09, for further information on our aims for this year please contact john-michael.lane@homesforislington.org.uk
